Responsible whale watching
Only pick operators licensed by Centro de Biodiversidad Marina. Licensed boats follow distance rules (80m from whales, 250m around a mother and calf), limit time with each whale and carry a Marine Mammal Observer. Avoid cheap unlicensed boats. The experience is better and safer.
What to bring
- Light jacket for the windy boat ride
- Seasickness tablets taken 1 hour before boarding
- Sun hat, reef-safe sunscreen and sunglasses
- Camera with a 200mm+ zoom lens
- Refillable water bottle and snack
Frequently asked questions
Humpback whales are in Samana Bay from mid-January to mid-March. Peak activity is February. Outside these dates there are no whales, only dolphins occasionally. Book at least 2 weeks ahead in peak season.
10 to 12 hours total. Pickup at 5:30-6:30 AM, 2-3 hours drive to Samana, 3 hours on the water, lunch at Cayo Levantado, return by 6:30 PM. Long but rewarding day.
Yes, but only in season. Seeing a humpback breach in its natural habitat is a bucket list experience. If you are staying less than 3 days in Puerto Plata, consider spending your day at Damajagua instead.
