How safe is Damajagua really?

Damajagua has operated as a guided park since 1998 with a strong safety record. Accidents are rare and almost always linked to ignored guide instructions or poor footwear. The canyon is managed by a local cooperative of guides, trained and certified by the Ministry of Environment.

The cliff jumps explained

The canyon has jumps of 2, 4, 6 and 8 meters depending on your route. All jumps can be skipped via a walk-around trail. Your guide demonstrates each one first and calls your position before you jump. Always jump feet-first with arms crossed over your chest. Never jump head-first.

Fitness and swimming level

The 7 waterfalls route is moderate: about 40 minutes of uphill hiking, then the downhill water route. The full 27 waterfalls is strenuous, with 90 minutes of hiking up slippery terrain. You must be able to swim at least 25 meters. If you have heart, back or knee issues, choose the 7 waterfalls route or skip the activity.

When to skip Damajagua

  • The day after heavy tropical rain. Check with your hotel or tour operator.
  • If you cannot swim confidently in open water.
  • If you have a recent injury, pregnancy or serious heart condition.
  • If you have small kids under 8 years old. Pick Playa Dorada or Ocean World instead.
